Bamboo Fort
In 1733, the sub-prefecture of Tamsui, Xu, Zhimin, commissioned a fortress constructed out of bamboo, a building material readily throughout Taiwan.
He thought that fortification of the area was necessary to improve public safety. |
Earth Fort
In 1806, new walls built of compact- earth were raised on the outside of the earlier bamboo walls in order to defend against pirates. The new wall served to increase the level of security.

Stone Fort
As the populations increased, culture and religion developed in the region. However, the region was plagued by violence between various culture and ethno- linguistie groups. In 1827, local leaders in Tekcham submitted proposals for the construction of permanent stone fortification. In 1828, constrution began on the new stone fortifications, which, with the City God Temple as the center, inclded four new city gates.
